BDK Advokati head of data protection practice, Bogdan Ivanišević, held a session on 20 August on the topic “GDPR and Serbian media” for participants in the project named “Strengthening Media Systems”. The event was hosted by ICT Hub, in its Belgrade office.

ICT Hub in partnership with USAID has launched media accelerator aiming to reinforce capacities and boost initiatives of local media entities that have the record of independent and objective reporting.

The entities included in the accelerator are: Vreme weekly magazine, Danas daily newspaper, BIRN media network, Beta news agency, Nova Ekonomija magazine and Istinomer web portal. Following the project goals each media outlet is given the opportunity to design and implement activities that will strengthen their capacities and market position.

Bogdan started the session by explaining various data protection concepts contai ned in the European Union Data protection directive (1995) and the current personal data protection law in Serbia. He particularly stressed the concept of public interest and when it justifies publication of personal data in the media and under which terms. Bogdan continued by explaining implications of GDPR on Serbian media and briefly introduced the draft of new Serbian law on data protection.
