BDK Advokati seminar on the new cybersecurity law in North Macedonia
On the 16th of June, BDK Advokati held a seminar in Skopje about the obligations for companies stemming from the Security of Network and Information Systems Act. The seminar was co-organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in North Macedonia and BDK Advokati.
Half a year after the Republic of North Macedonia began applying Act, the application gained momentum with the enactment of the first batch of implementing by-laws on June 12, 2026. The law harmonizes national legislation with EU Directive 2022/2555 (NIS2 Directive). We previously wrote about the law here.
In their presentations at the seminar in Skopje, BDK Advokati’s senior partner Bogdan Ivanišević, senior associate Anja Gligorević, and Skopje-based attorney at law Mila Sotirovska (Law Office Filipovski, in cooperation with BDK Advokati), focused on the following issues:
- Qualification of entities that apply information and communication technologies as "essential" and "important"
- Risk-management measures, with a particular focus on arrangements with suppliers or service providers ("supply chain")
- Appointment of a cybersecurity officer
- Obligation to inform about incidents on the network and information system
- Professional supervision and penal provisions
- Summary of implementation steps
The attendees, including representatives of leading companies in the North Macedonian financial, IT, electricity distribution, pharmaceutical, and telecom sectors, offered many insightful comments during all sessions. The common thread in the discussions was the awareness of the supreme importance of cyber security, but also concern about the costs the implementation will exact on the entities subject to the Act and the dilemma about the preparedness of the authorities to enforce the law vigorously.
